CAMP 2014 REFLECTION

Camp Arrabri Lodge: 2014

At Arrabri Lodge the 5/6’s participated in many activities throughout the three days. We were told at school beforehand, what activities we would be doing and what groups we were in. This what our group did…

Activity 1: Archery
One of the hardest challenges we had, was Archery. Our group’s goal was to hit more bullseyes than the other groups. Before we had a go, Mrs Mckenna and one of the camp leaders explained to us the safety rules and how to hold and shoot the bow. For safety we had to wear armbands to prevent us getting hurt. We think Group B was very enthusiastic and had lots of fun at Archery!

Activity 2: Ropes
Our next activity was Ropes. Mrs King showed and explained each obstacle so we would know what to do. Next we chose our partners/groups and got told where to start the course. The aim of the course was to not touch the ground. Our whole group managed to complete the task easily. Our group really enjoyed the Ropes Course!

Activity 3: Flying Fox
Our third activity was The Flying Fox. First, one the of the camp leaders talked about the safety instructions. The first people to start included Jaida and I. You had to climb a ladder and sit on a swing with a harness on. Everyone in our group thought that the flying fox was great.

Activity 4: Giant Swing
When we went to the giant swing everyone was excited. When we arrived we all listened to the camp staff and started having our turns. When it was your go you had to wear glasses and a helmet, then you were pulled up by the rest of your group. When you reached the highest point one of the camp staff threw the rope and you dropped and continued swinging. Most of the people in our group said the giant swing was their favourite activity!

Activity 5: Orienteering

Orienting was one of our favourite tasks .In Orienteering you had to find tags (with letters and numbers on them) around the camp. The aim of the task was to find all the numbers from 1-26 as soon as possible. Once you had found all the tags you had to unscramble all the letters to make a sentence/phrase. Alison and I came third out of our group! Group B definitely enjoyed this activity!

Activity 6: Mini Golf
In Mini Golf Mrs Smith was our leader. She told us the rules and how to play.. Once we were in our groups Mrs Smith placed us in different courses up to no.18, so we were spread out evenly. After all the groups had completed the course Mrs. Smith then told us to aim for a hole in one. The best high score was 8 in a group. Our group scored about 6 hole in ones which was pretty good!

Why school camps should not be banned

Why school camps should not be banned.

I strongly believe that school camps should not be banned for many reasons.

Firstly, school camps are something students look forward to. If there weren’t any school camps students wouldn’t enjoy school as much. Students like seeing and interacting with their classmates outside of school and taking a break off school work.

Secondly, school camps are a new way of learning. Teachers are always trying to find fun and interesting ways to teach their students. What better way to do it than take your class for a schol camp. With school camps you can teach your students how what they learn at school applies to real life.

Thirdly, school camps are a break off school. Not just the students but the teachers too, need a break once in a while. If you go on a school camp it will relax you and leave you ready for school, in the next few days.

Lastly, school camps are an outdoor experience. Whether you’re sleeping in tents or cabins a school camp will teach you new things. Going on camps teach you that you can have fun without TV or phones/ computers. At school camps you can try new foods, try new activities you have never done (eg. Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Canoeing.) and enjoy spending time with your friends.

All students love going on school camps so why take away this great experience from them? For all the above reasons I conclude that school camps shouldn’t be banned.

How does a photographer edit their photos?

“Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out take another shot.” -Unknown

Photography is important because it helps us record our memories. It tells a story, and let’s us share our surroundings with others. Photography shows what’s important to us. It can move us and inspire us. Photography is a hobby or job for a lot of people, without it we would never be able to capture our memories.

Most photographers use photoshop to edit their photos. Other apps include Afterlight, VSCO Cam and Snapseed. For sharing photos most photographers opt for Instagram, Flickr, Snapchat and Pinterest.

Sometimes photographers might take their photo on the wrong angle so the first thing you must do is straighten and crop your photo to make them look more natural.

The next step is to set levels and adjust exposure. This means if your photo is too dark or light you can adjust the lighting to make to make the photo look better.

Experiment with contrast! A brightness/contrast tool is very important and effective. Contrast is the difference between the light and dark parts of an image. Which means if you turn up the contrast the light parts of an image will become lighter and the dark parts of an image will become darker and vice versa if you turn it down.

The fourth and final step to creating the perfect photo is to adjust the saturation level and add filters. The level of saturation makes a huge colour difference and the filters change the look of an image.

Photography is a passion to many people. Editing apps and websites have changed over the years but it’s purpose is still the same.

“A portrait is not made in the camera but of either side of it.” -Edward Steichen

Why do heats beat? – Explanation

Here is my explanation on why hearts beat:

Why do hearts beat?

All living things breathe. But why do they breathe? When do they stop? Read on to find out why…

The circulatory system is about blood circulating the body. It is one of the most important systems in the body. In this explanation I will be telling you how the circulatory system works.

Blood has four main components- red blood cells, white blood cells, liquid and plasma. This is what blood is made of. The red blood cells are the ones that carry the oxygen. The lungs are where your oxygen comes from, so if you have an asthma your lungs will be the organ to try to produce more oxygen.

Everytime you hear a heartbeat it is actually the sound of your heart pumping, so it can push the blood around your body. The heart then pumps oxygen-rich blood through tiny tubes, that lead to every part of the body. After the blood is pushed to all parts of the body, it is then pushed back again.

Did you know when you’re running fast your heart beats faster to pump the blood around your body, because your body needs more oxygen? That is why after you are running for a long time, you run out of breath. And it only takes a minute for all the blood to go around your body?

It’s true! The circulatory system is fast and important! Without the circulatory system we wouldn’t be able to survive.

Migration Biography

Biography: Lina Di Petta

On 19th September 1954, at only 13 ½ years of age Lina Di Petta immigrated from Molise, South Italy to Australia. She travelled with her mother, Nunzia and her 20 year old sister, Antoinetta. Her father had already migrated to Australia three years prior. They travelled on a ship called The Sydney. As they were in third class there were many people crammed into cabins, 500 in total with most of them Italians.

Even though the journey was fabulous and very exciting, for Lina, for the rest of her family it was horrible. “ Everyone was sick so I had to get up early each morning and grab food for my family.” After a long, and tiring 30 day journey, they arrived on Australian shores, leaving many friends and some of their close family behind.

Once Lina disembarked she saw her father waiting with open arms on the harbour for them. “I was very happy to see my Dad after three years.” The four of them then took an old, red train from Port Melbourne to Flinders Street and then another connecting train to their home in Huntingdale. As part of their Dad’s job agreement they were forced to live there for 12 months. The whole family were all very grateful to be living in Australia because in Italy they had no comforts such as hot water, running water or gas. “I had all the comfort I needed in Australia.”

“We moved to Australia for a better life and better work opportunities.”

Lina felt that Australia was quite an easy place to settle into except that there was a language barrier as she did not speak a word of English, only Italian.

Once they were settled Lina decided to get a job at a steel frame making factory but as she was only 13 ½ she had to lie about her age. Because Lina was quite tall for her age they believed that she was 15 and she got the job, earning about $5 a fortnight, which was actually quite a lot back in those days. “I didn’t go to school in Australia because my Dad was very sick and we needed the extra money I was able to earn. I only completed Grades 1-5.”

Looking back to when she was in Italy, Lina realises that migrating to Australia was the best thing her parents did for her and that there was no better solution.

Genius Hour- Updated!

GENIUS HOUR

What have you chosen to learn about?
We have chosen to learn about the History of Fashion and how fashion trends have changed and evolved.

What stage are you up to?
We have finished painting the t-shirt so now we are up to researching the history of famous fashion designers.

What is working well in your project?
I think working together, as a group, has been working well. Finding everything we needed was also easy.

What has been difficult?
I think painting the t-shirt has been difficult because it is hard to paint exactly to the pattern.

What do you need to focus on in the next few weeks?
We need to start researching the history of fashion and fashion trends from past years. We also need to finalise how we are going to present.

Here is a link to a fashion designer we are focusing on for our presentation: http://mobile.emiliopucci.com/#home
